Career Academy culinary students made a fall harvest soup this morning. They started with roasting their vegetables which included butternut squash, carrots, onions, fresh garlic, and three seasonings. They prepared crispy fried sage leaves for an edible garnish and added a drizzle of cream. It is delicious!

October Student of the Month

This past Friday was an unforgettable day in Greene County as we officially dedicated two stunning 9-foot-tall historical monuments honoring the Schoolboy Soldiers of Rippey!

The public joined us for two moving ceremonies - first at noon on the Greene County courthouse lawn in Jefferson and later at 2:30 p.m. at Old Rippey Cemetery. Today’s students donned replica uniforms to march, pay respect, present the colors, and bring this incredible chapter of local history to life. The Jefferson ceremony was made even more special with a musical tribute featuring two performances by the folk duo Weary Ramblers (Chad Elliott and Kathryn Severing Fox)!

What started 18 months ago as a simple Iowa History class assignment - when guest speaker Chuck Offenburger shared the story of the 32 schoolboys and two teachers who left the prairie to serve in the Civil War - has transformed into an extraordinary community achievement.

From researching and authoring the text carved into the $61,000 monuments to organizing marches, holding Memorial Day programs, and working on an upcoming fall play by John Busbee, these students have truly gone above and beyond.

Huge congratulations to:
- Dena Boyd for her inspiring vision, passion, and guidance in encouraging her students to create something that lasts far beyond the classroom.
- The talented students whose dedication, artwork, and research made these monuments a reality.
- Chuck Offenburger, the Schoolboy Soldiers of Rippey Memorial Committee, Jefferson Monument Works, the Greene County Historical Society, and all community partners and performers who helped bring this history home.

Thank you to everyone who joined, supported, and marched along to honor these brave figures from our past. Your hard work has given Greene County a legacy that will stand for generations to come!

Burger Brand

Greene County High School Ram Shop recently manufactured a custom meat brand that was commissioned by a staff member as a gift.

Prior to graduating last year, high school senior Lucy Vander Linden transformed a photo image of the recipient’s custom logo into a 3D model using computer aided drafting software as part of her independent study in the Industrial Technology program. The 3D model was then used in conjunction with the schools recently acquired CNC milling machine and CNC lathe to machine raw metal into a finished product ready for branding burgers.

Students in the Greene County high school Ram Shop are learning real world practical skills, building confidence, and exploring career opportunities. Are you interested in a custom branding iron for your burgers, steaks or sourdough loaves? Contact the Greene County High School to learn more.

A huge thank you to Greene County Development Corporation (GCDC) Executive Director Greg Piklapp, American Athletic's Kristen Russell, and GCDC for sponsoring our 2026 Manufacturing Day Field Trip. Forty-five students started the morning with breakfast provided by GCDC and then broke into two groups.

One group traveled to American Athletic to meet with Kristen Russell and her team for a tour and an informational session. The other group met in the auditorium with Greg Piklapp to hear about job opportunities in the manufacturing industry here in Greene County and around the country. Students learned about different careers including jobs available in the data center industry. Both groups then switched.

Thank you to our multi-cultural director Sara Huddleston and instructors Jerredd Elken, Matthew Fiedler, Ethan Martin, and Maddie VanSickle for helping chaperone and coordinate our field trip.

Industrial Technology Student Project
Greene County High School Senior student, Lincoln Olsem, recently machined and fabricated a ruggedized bench vise as part of his advanced milling machine operations class. The entire project consisted of 15 different components that were machined on a manual lathe or manual milling machine before being welded together. A big shout out to our friends at Power Lift in Jefferson for donating the steel for this student project! Lincoln has made a very nice generational tool that should serve him well for years to come.

Greene County High School Adds Fourth-Axis Capability to CNC Milling Machine, Giving Students Advanced Manufacturing Experience

The Industrial Technology Department is expanding its hands-on manufacturing education program with the addition of a fourth axis to its CNC milling machine. The upgrade will provide students with valuable experience using technology found in modern manufacturing environments while expanding the types of projects they can design and produce.

A traditional three-axis CNC mill moves a cutting tool along the X, Y, and Z axes. A fourth axis adds rotary movement, allowing students to rotate a workpiece during the machining process. This additional capability gives students an opportunity to learn more advanced CNC programming, setup, design, and manufacturing techniques.
