Thirteen eager students in grades 1-3 joined us for the culinary career exploration camp on Monday, April 17th, where they prepared three different kinds of pizza. Students learned proper hand washing techniques, how to use a knife, how to flavor the food with the right seasonings, that aprons protect the food when you are a chef, and how to work together as a team.
These young chefs created three different kinds of pizza with the guidance of Chef Julie Kennedy, Ram Restaurant student Seth Stucky, and Youth Director Samantha Hardaway. Pizza crackers made with a Triscuit whole wheat cracker, marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese, and turkey pepperoni microwaved for around 25 seconds were a hit. We discussed how this is a very healthy snack that students in this age range can fix for themselves.
Next up, students learned about knife skills and how to properly cut vegetables and fruit. We started by practicing on flour and then moved to the veggies. Each table of four was given a bowl with sour cream and cream cheese and then added herbs and spices. They then created veggie pizza which was so good.
The third pizza they prepared was fruit pizza. Chef Kennedy had baked large sugar cookies which the students frosted and then added fruit which they cut up on their own.
The time went so fast and everyone had a great time!
Our next career exploration camp is on Monday, April 24th, with students in grades 4-8. If you want to register your child, please contact Samantha Hardaway at ISU Extension at 515.386.2138 to see if there are any spots left.
